About

History

Local writer and teacher, Katherine Grace Bond started EpicWrite as a one-time exercise in 2003 to teach plotting to her students. The kids came as characters they created (including a pirate, an alien looking for a toaster, and a ghost) and role-played scenes based on the Hero's Journey.  Then they wrote down the stories that they had acted out.  At the end, they all shared the stories they had created while role playing.

The event was incredibly popular, so Katherine continued it annually. By 2009, EpicWrite™ had become so popular that Katherine began doing quarterly overnight events, expanding the Summer event to take place over several days.

In 2012, Katherine’s son, Gabriel took over as director of the EpicWrite events.

Finally, in April of 2013, we became a Non-Profit Organization.

That “one-time exercise” has grown into a program that has been creating welcoming community for teenagers for a decade.

Today, those original EpicWriters have all grown up, and a new generation of young adults is discovering the fun and camaraderie of creative role playing.

EpicWrite Today

Today, EpicWrite has expanded beyond live action role-playing events for teens. We also teach creative writing "Storycraft" workshops, run overnight retreats, and lead a public writing and critique group for ages 15 and up.

We still host multiple kinds of LARP events. Every few months we have a one day "In the Park" event, and at least once a year we have a huge overnight camping event! For college age and above we have EpicWrite "Beyond", tailored toward more mature storytellers with more advanced writing skills.

As EpicWrite evolves and expands, we plan to keep our mission of building safe, welcoming communities at our core.

EpicWrite is a place to get away from the world and spend time with like-minded creative people. Friendships started at EpicWrite events last lifetimes. Our community has saved the lives of several young people, and we hope to maintain the powerful bonds we have built with our growing community.

The Game System

EpicWrite’s game system differs from other LARP systems: We don’t have any character classes, ranks, or a combat system. If participants end up in combat with another character, the outcome will be based in the story.

EpicWrite events are based in various set universes, which change based on the story genre of the event.

The Role Playing is broken down into scenes. Each scene is based on a step from the Hero’s Journey.

Participants are sent to various locations at the venue, and will meet either one or multiple characters and act out a scene based on the current step of the Hero’s Journey.

After each scene, everyone is given time to write out what happened in the form of a story. Then we send everyone back out for a new scene!
